Lighting Designer/Operator
Key Responsibilities
Lighting Designer/Operator works closely with the director, producer and stage manager to design and prepare the lighting scheme that will support the artistic vision for the production. Lighting functions to make the actors and the set visible to the audience and to evoke the appropriate mood, indicate the time and day, redirect the emphasis to various areas of the stage and reinforce the overall style of the production.
Supporting Activities

Reviews the script to be produced noting the type of light it calls for in each scene.

Shares ideas with the director and set designer about how light can be used to enhance the production concept.

Attends rehearsals to get a feel for the lighting cues and to plan how to light the actors as they move from place to place on stage.

When the blocking is set, the lighting designer can start to work out which lighting instruments will be used and where each one will be located.

Physically sets up the lighting components and records (manually and/or electronically) the sequence of lighting events for the production.

Operates, or supervises the operation of, the lighting strategy during the production.
